Nissan GT-R Engine – Class Leading Features
Victoria Nissan in Victoria, Texas is the area’s only GT-R Certified Dealer. Victoria Nissan has factory trained experts in both the advanced technology, and the everyday comforts of the GT-R. Today we’re going to share some of the technology that make the GT-R a class leader in performance.
The Nissan GT-R is powered by a 3.8-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine with twin turbochargers, code-named VR38DETT (DOHC Electronically controlled Twin Turbo). This 485 horsepower powerhouse has several features make this high-performance engine one of the most advanced among its competitors.

Twin Air-to-Air Intercoolers deliver charge air to two independent intake plenums

Twin Air-to-Air intercoolers
Two high-performance turbochargers — one per cylinder bank — deliver a maximum 10.2 pounds of boost to two independent intake plenums via twin air-to-air intercoolers. Both turbochargers are integrated into the exhaust manifold to provide quick response. The intercoolers make intake air cooler and denser for better combustion and therefore higher performance.
The turbochargers are developed by IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.). IHI is a leader in turbo development and supplies many race car turbo systems. The GT-R turbo system is based on a design originating from Nissan Racing Engine development.
Plasma-Sprayed Cylinder Bores

Plasma Sprayed Cylinder Bores - The chemical coating applied by the plasma-spraying process is significantly thinner than conventional liners
Aluminum-alloy cylinder blocks typically require steel liners (sleeves) for the cylinder bores to help maintain the shape of the cylinder bores and resist wear. GT-R’s engine uses an advanced plasma-spraying process to apply a chemical coating to the cylinder bores. This process results in an extremely hard and smooth surface that eliminates the need for steel liners.
The coated cylinder bores dissipate heat very quickly, enhancing power output and fuel efficiency. Because the coating is significantly thinner than steel liners (0.15mm vs. 2.6mm), it reduces engine weight by 6.6 pounds without sacrificing strength or durability.
Secondary Air Management System
A secondary air management system provides faster catalyst activation at cold start-up to reduce emissions and achieve LEV2/ULEV certification. The system includes an independent pump, air cleaner, and mass air flow (MAF) meter. The system brings the catalytic converters up to operating temperature very quickly to provide for reduced cold start emissions.
Thermostatically Controlled Engine Oil Cooler

Nissan GT-R Thermostatically Controlled Oil Cooler
A thermostatically controlled oil-cooling system helps maintain a consistent engine oil temperature. When the oil reaches certain temperatures the oil cooler increases the available oil cooling area to keep the oil at optimum temperatures.
Lateral Wet and Dry Sump Oiling System

The g-forces generated during high-speed cornering can interfere with the proper circulation of oil within the engine. To counteract this problem, GT-R uses a lateral wet and dry sump oiling system that helps prevent oil backflow into the cylinder head area during high-g maneuvers. This “crossover” oil return system controls draining so that at high lateral g-forces, oil flows from the left head to the right side of the block (or vice versa). In addition, a dedicated oil scavenger pump carries oil away from the bottom of the turbochargers.
Hand-Built

Every GT-R engine is hand-built in a clean room
Like some exotic sports cars and aircraft engines, GT-R’s engine is hand-built by a single craftsman in a clean room environment. In addition, engine output is measured at partial and full loads prior to shipment from the Yokohama engine plant.
