The Nissan Leaf and the Polar Bear!

The new Nissan Leaf is getting a ton of buzz recently. Not because it is so different looking. Not because it is 100% electric. Not because it has no tail pipe even. It is getting buzz because of the unbelievably touching commercial that has recently been released.

Amongst all of its love and adoration from the ad community and people across the land – comes a little bit of “so what?” and criticism as well. One author even creates a list of things you could do to get even more than a hug from the Polar Bear, such as, carpooling, riding your bike, or joining transit organizations such as Smart Growth America and Complete Streets.

I say, this commercial is innovative and makes a point. It makes its point and does not attempt to make every other green-living point there is to make. Certainly there is a varying level of greenness a person can accomplish. Should we really be so picky as to what ways individuals choose to lower their carbon footprint?

If you are ready to buy a new car, the Nissan Leaf is all electric and a greener option than the all gas cars. If you want to keep your reasonably efficient used cars running for as long as possible, that is certainly another way to keep factory production lower, and landfills less full. 2010 Nissan Pathfinder- Value Packed, Room for 7, 22+ mpg

With most of your auto manufacturers opting to build bigger crossover (car based) suv’s to reach 22-24 mpg and carry 6-7 passenger’s, Nissan has stayed with a traditional body-on-frame (truck based) suv that will still provide the same results.

The Nissan Pathfinder is a mid-sized, 3 row suv that provides comfort for 7, gets 22+ mpg highway, and still offers the same qualities one would expect out of a traditional suv.  It’s built on a rugged welded ladder frame with full-length box section rails and high strength steel components versus a car chassis.  It can also tow 6,000 lbs. (7,000 V8) which is about twice the amount that a crossover can tow.  So if it’s built like a truck and performs like a truck, it should ride like a truck right?  No.  Braking away from the solid rear axle, Nissan has incorporated a heavy duty independent double-wishbone suspension in the rear as well as the front providing a smooth car-like drive.
